Mask Project (Pre-COVID)
This is the first set of images from my Mask Project. This project was created before COVID changed the way we view medical masks. The original intent was specifically referencing how fear, intertwined religion and/or medicine/disease have often been used as tools of control and oppression to gain power over various minorities. Some of the specific influences were the Tuskegee Experiment (https://www.history.com/news/the-infamous-40-year-tuskegee-study), which left approximately Black men with untreated syphilis for decades but they were told they were being treated; forced sterilization of minorities and poor people in the US (https://ihpi.umich.edu/news/forced-sterilization-policies-us-targeted-minorities-and-those-disabilities-and-lasted-21st.; the way women's health concerns are treated by many doctors in this country; and the subset of charitable organizations that purport to go overseas to help provide medical services and other assistance, but use that as a method to convert people away from their religious beliefs and impose their values on them. More images from the series will be posted, with different subjects/models.
